Ask.com, Treasure Hunters, and Google.com

Have you been watching Treasure Hunters on Monday nights? The show is a mix of The Amazing Race and an Americanized version of The DaVinci Code. In the show the hunters have a laptop available to them and they use ask.com to help them find things.

In last weeks episode they were hunting for an artifact in Paris. The location they needed to go was the Catacombs of Paris. During the show the contestants were shown typing into ask.com maps of paris france

Why didn’t they try the mapping technology from ask.com? Because, when you ask ask.com for a map of Paris, France this what you get.

But they do have detailed street maps of Paris I had to scroll from US over the Atlantic to get to Paris. I could not get it to be returned as a result for any of my searches.

But if you search for this Les Catacombes de Paris, France you get nothing.

If you know the address you do get a result:

102 quai de seine Paris, Ile-De-France, France 95530

What would happen if they were allowed to use Google?First, they could actually get a map of Paris by a keyword search.

And if they asked this question, they would get to see where the Catacombes are: Les Catacombes de Paris

And if they knew where they were they could even get directions to the Les Catacombes.

None of which I was able to do or do easily with ask.com.

In the ads from Ask.com they have a line that goes like this:

“Google is not better, its just more popular.”

Um, I would like to respectfully disagree.

Flat world democratization

Yeah, I’ve been reading Friedman. This gal, Nikki Neal, is the prime example of what Tom is on about. She is 21 and all she has done is a video of herself mouthing the words to a song. Her video is a popular video at Google. Which is going to be driving a whole bunch of traffic to her myspaces.

The world voted by doing. And she won. She is in a class, at least on video.google.com, as Budweiser and Jetta. And the funny thing is ad companies will probably try to emulate what she has done. The little guy, that being Nikki, can go up against the big guy, that being Bud, and possibly win. Too bad she isn’t selling anything.

PR is history and so are rankings

I offered a friend of mine some space on one of my sites. He said, but why would I want that? That page would have no PR. Yeah, of course it won’t have PR I replied.

But don’t look at today look at tomorrow. Because as soon as you get that little magic green bar you are looking at history.

I think he thought I was a little too philosophical that morning.

The point is this you cannot change the rankings or the PR of today, only the rankings and PR of tomorrow.

In both my races, Yahoo! has not found anything yet.

Losing the faith

I bailed out of GOOG. I lost a little bit of money, not much. Would be further into the hole if I had held on. Would have made a big % if I had sold when it was kicking around $470.00.

Why did I bail? I believe in Google, I don’t believe in the street.

What’s in a domain name?

Had a client recently want a KW stuffed domain name. Lets say he wants to place for [San Jose red furry widgets builders] he wanted a domain like:

www.sanjoseredfurrywidgetbuilders.com

Um, well, I tried to explain that KWs in the domain do help, but it was more important to have a short domain name people could type in and say to each other over the phone. He didn’t listen. He’s now got a 17 character long domain name.
