Flat world democratization

Yeah, I’ve been reading Friedman. This gal, Nikki Neal, is the prime example of what Tom is on about. She is 21 and all she has done is a video of herself mouthing the words to a song.? Her video is a popular video at Google.? Which is going to be driving a whole bunch of traffic to her myspaces.

The world voted by doing.? And she won.? She is in a class, at least on video.google.com, as Budweiser and Jetta.? And the funny thing is ad compaines will probably try to emulate what she has done.? The little guy, that being Nikki, can go up against the big guy, that being Bud, and possibly win.? Too bad she isn’t selling anything.

PR is history and so are rankings

I offered a friend of mine some space on one of my sites.? He said, but why would I want that?? That page would have no PR.? Yeah, of course it won?€™t have PR I replied.

But don?€™t look at today look at tomorrow.? Because as soon as you get that little magic green bar you are looking at history.

I think he thought I was a little too philosophical that morning.

The point is this ?€“ you cannot change the rankings or the PR of today, only the rankings and PR of tomorrow.

Losing the faith

I bailed out of GOOG. I lost a little bit of money, not much. Would be further into the hole if I had held on. Would have made a big % if I had sold when it was kicking around $470.00.

Why did I bail? I believe in Google, I don’t believe in the street.

What’s in a domain name?

Had a client recently want a KW stuffed domain name. Lets say he wants to place for [San Jose red furry widgets builders] he wanted a domain like:

www.sanjoseredfurrywidgetbuilders.com

Um, well, I tried to explain that KWs in the domain do help, but it was more important to have a short domain name people could type in and say to each other over the phone. He didn’t listen. He’s now got a 17 character long domain name.

Lunch with Andrew Goodman

I recently had the opportunity to take Andrew Goodman of Page-Zero out to lunch in downtown Toronto. I?€™ve seen Andrew at SES, but this is the first time I?€™ve formally meet Andrew.

Andrew started his professional life teaching political science. He?€™s got a masters in the said subject and 8 of the 9 chapters, his words, of his PHD. How ironic to be seated with a political guru on Election Day in Canada?

Andrew started to discover the opportunities in the on-line marketing world were abound back in late 90?€™s and early 2000?€™s. He left the political science gig and has not turned back since.

His company is a mix of about 9 people some of them employees and others partners.

Andrew and I talked about most of the basics revolving around SEO. He was a little guarded. Maybe he thought I was a company spy or would post his golden nuggets on my blog. Not the case ?€“ anything off the record would stay that way.

Andrew is a cool guy. And I would recommend his companies services. He says they do mostly PPC management.

2nd place goes to Google for ‘Race You There’

Google found it 7 days later.? Not nearly as fast as MSN.? Yahoo! is still searching for both.

Spammy BMWs

Well, Matt Cutts, has announced to the SEM/SEO world that Google is going to start cracking down on foreign language spam.

He announced in his blog that www.bmw.de has been removed from their index for serving up different content to the spider from the content that is served up to the surfer. There is a screen shot of this in his posting.

This is fairly significant and really speaks to how Google views the world. You see it is OK to hate Google and tell the world about it. Google will be happy to put you in their index providing you don’t spam. Think I’m joking - no, I am not - check out this post from Matt. Look for the ‘f’ word.

Don’t get me wrong I understand why Google de-listed bmw.de - but who will this look worse for? BMW or Google. Well, I can guarantee there are some people over at BMW saying “I told you so.” You see, image is hugely important companies like BMW. So every piece of screen real estate goes towards that image. They don’t want to give any of that space to SEO. Yet, the higher ups will get annoyed they don’t show up for some KWs… so they put the pressure on the lower downs… and presto you’ve got the spam Matt pointed out. BTW - you could serve up the home page in flash and redirect anything without a flash browser to a non-flash version of the page. AFAIK this is safe thing to do.

So the question - who does this affect? Google or BMW? Would a user of Google looking for car information from BMW in Germany be seriously confused if Google didn’t return any results from bmw.de? Likely they would. You see - there is a certain expectation of all sites to be in the index. And it is 100% expected for important large sites to be in. Take the whitehouse.gov. Could you imagine if they spammed and Google delisted them? What would happen if someone arrived at whitehouse.gov and then did a site search for George Bush from the tool bar? Would the user go “ah, naughty whitehouse, they must’ve been spamming and got the boot!” Um, not likely unless they are an SEO. They would assume Google was messed up.

And so too might someone think Google was messed up if someone does a site search for BMW at bmw.de (right now there are no results).

Um, Google are you messed up?
